Seed Bombs - A small revolution in our hands

Ostara has passed, bringing with the arrival of spring and our rebirth in the light after the long night. Unfortunately, even Nature herself is searching for the light in the dark: the fight against climate change. Here is a small, easy and fun way to help Mother Earth.

If you're already familiar with Guerrilla Gardening, you already know what I'm talking about. The Seed Bombs are nothing but dried clay balls, in which seeds of native plants are inserted. Given the modest dimensions and the spherical shape, the Seed Bombs are ideal for being dropped into the ground: they can be thrown, rolled or even pulled with a sling! The rain will then activate the dormant seeds, inside the fertile clay, and nature will do the rest.

Apparently it was a method already known and used in Ancient Egypt, to reconstruct the crops after the Nile floods. Today's use of the Seed Bombs is more than anything a way to increase the population, now dangerously at risk of extinction, of precious pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies. They can be planted in flower beds, railway lines, stations, parking lots, construction sites ... wherever there is a bit of land and a need of greenery!

The Seed Bombs became popular during the 1970s, thanks to the pacifist movements and the talks of the conservation of the environment: flowers and trees were planted in the cities, as a sign of protest against the expansion of cement. The increase in plants on city soil served to encourage the reproduction of local fauna, reduce air pollution and even provide a zero kilometer food source! (For example, you can very well grow tomatoes even on the windowsill of a city apartment).

Below a simple guide on how to create your own Seed Bombs.

You will need:
  • Meadow flower seeds or seeds collected from the garden.
  • Peat-free compost.
  • Water.
  • Powdered clay (found in craft shops).
  • Mixing bowl.

Creating your seed bomb:
  • In a bowl, mix together 1 cup of seeds with 5 cups of compost and 2-3 cups of clay powder (you could use clay soil instead if you have it).
  • Slowly mix in water with your hands until everything sticks together.
  • Roll the mixture into firm balls.
  • Leave the balls to dry in a sunny spot.
  • Now for the fun bit! Plant your seed bombs by throwing them at bare parts of the garden and wait to see what pops up!
  • Extra bit: you can charge the seed bombs with your intent and/or putting sigils in them, in order to create spells to heal the Earth at the same time.

Have fun and bright rebirth!
